Data Visualization in Journalism

Data visualization is a great way to put numbers and statistics into context. The following stories use different formats of data visualization :

The Huffington Post - "America’s 4 Richest Families Own as Much as the Bottom 40%"

Using simple bar graphs, this story illustrates the difference between income disparity and wealth disparity in America. Having the two graphs side by side really puts the difference in perspective. There are appropriate labels for each data point, making these large numbers easier to digest.

Additionally, using the faces of America's wealthiest individuals helps the reader to see that the pool of wealth is dominated by white male entrepreneurs

Bloomberg- "What's Next fort the Boeing 736 Max After Global Grounding"

This story gives the reader a good overview of the sale ,use, and halting of Boeing 737 Max 8 use in light of the air tragedies in Indonesia, and more recently, Ethiopia. It utilizes a color coded map as well as a bar chart. The map allows a viewer to quickly pinpoint their own country and other locationg. Using bright, contrasting colors helps to create a clear differentiation between the countries that have completely halted flights and the countries where a few carriers are grounding planes. The bar chart provides insight into which airlines ordered and received these aircraft, and the exact numbers for each airline. This could be useful if somebody wanted to find out the likelihood of them travelling on one of these aircraft on their next flight.

Tampa Bay Times - "If You're Black"

This use of data visualization is very immersive. It presents the reader with small bits of information at a time, and allows the reader to choose when they’re ready to move on to the next set of data via a series of clicks. At no point does the data seem overwhelming. In terms of visuals, it relies on a combination of both numbers, pictoral representations of those numbers, and captions to give context. Using simple black and white circles to represent black and white bodies makes it easy enough to conceptualize the numbers- and makes the stark contrast much clearer.
